While wait for spring to arrive in Atlanta, we’re happy to spend plenty of time inside the nice, warm Center for Puppetry Arts! February may be a short month, but we’ve packed a ton of fun into these four short weeks. Check out everything we have on the calendar this month, and make your plans to join us!

On stage all month: Rainforest Adventures. It’s a jungle out there in this entertaining and enlightening peek at the amazing Amazonian rainforest. This show features many puppetry styles, including marionette and Czech Black, and is presented in the Mainstage Theater. The Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Pink River Dolphin Marionette.

On stage Feb. 9-11: The Pigeoning. Convinced the pigeons are plotting against him, Frank sets out on an adventure to solve a problem that perhaps isn’t really there in this darkly comedic yet heartfelt story that spins articulate puppetry, live music, and lo-fi special effects into an epic tale about the illusion of safety and control in the context of the end of the world. Presented in the Downstairs Theater.

In the Worlds of Puppetry Museum all month: Guided tours of the museum take place Tuesday-Friday at 1 pm, Saturday at 11 am. Guided tours of the Jim Henson Collection take place Tuesday-Friday at 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. Behind-the-scenes tours take place Saturdays and Sundays at 3 pm.

Now open in the Special Exhibit Gallery: Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls! Indian Puppets celebrate the cultural range of India by exploring the diversity of puppetry techniques and genres across the subcontinent. Learn how puppetry has been used in India for over a millennium as an important storytelling tool, while seeing both traditional and contemporary pieces. This special exhibit is included with Museum admission.

2/3: It’s Elmo’s birthday! Did you know Elmo turns 3 and a half on every birthday? We’re celebrating him on Feb. 3 with balloon animals, an Elmo bounce house, and Elmo donuts courtesy of Bon Glaze (while supplies last; first come, first served). Then come inside the museum and snap a pic with Elmo in his birthday hat! Festivities included at no extra charge with your paid Museum admission or all-inclusive Rainforest Adventures ticket. 10 am-1 pm.

2/3: Tomorrow We Disappear film screening. We’re screening this documentary in honor of our special exhibit Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls. This documentary is about Kathputli, India’s colony of artists, magicians, acrobats, and puppeteers, as they wrangle with the reality of their approaching eviction. After the screening, enjoy a talkback with Kelsey Fritz, one of the Co-Curators of the Center’s special exhibit Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls. The talkback will feature an interactive with Kathputli marionettes from India. 8 pm.

2/6: Toddler Tuesday! This month’s theme is Valentine’s Day and Emotions. This interactive museum program is designed for ages 2-4, and includes special games, dancing and story time! 9 am-1 pm.

2/10: Capoeria Demonstration. 60% of the Amazon rainforest is located in Brazil. Join us as we celebrate their culture with a live demonstration of the traditional Brazilian martial art of capoeira and live Brazilian music presented by Axé Capoeira Atlanta! This event is FREE with your paid museum or all-inclusive Rainforest Adventures admission. 10 am-1 pm.

2/11: Rainforest Adventures: a sensory-friendly performance. Performance alterations include theater lights dimmed down but not out, consistent sound levels and lower volume of show soundtrack, freedom for children to talk and to leave their seat if necessary, a quiet zone in the lobby, and permission to bring quiet, contained snacks and beverages. Create-A-Puppet Workshop classrooms will be brighter, quieter, and feature less-messy puppet building materials and slightly simplified puppet designs. This modified programming also extends to include our expanded Museum, where lighting will be adjusted and specialized educational activities (such as touch tables and guided storytelling) will be integrated. Fidget toys and sound-reducing headphones will also be available. Learn more about our ASD programming here. 1 pm.

2/12: Explore Puppetry Series: Unlocking Voice—Yours and Your Puppet’s! Explore tips and techniques that will lead you to discovering all the puppet voices inside of you! This panel of Center for Puppetry Arts artists will share warm-up suggestions, give hints for vocal health, provide keys to unlocking character voices, fill in blanks about how to sing with and through a puppet, and then work with intimate groups in “private coaching” sessions. 7 pm.

2/17: Folkmanis sloth puppet giveaway. Join us for the 11 am or 1 pm performances of Rainforest Adventures and enter to win an adorable Folkmanis sloth puppet! All patrons can enter a drawing for a chance to win a baby sloth puppet from our Museum Store!

2/24: Chattahoochee Nature Center activity. Educators from the Chattahoochee Nature Center will join us for a presentation and paper snake bracelet activity. Activity included with your paid museum or all-inclusive Rainforest Adventure admission. Show times at 11 am and 1 pm. 10 am-1 pm.
