Happy New Year! We’re ready for a really exciting 2018, and we hope you are too! We’re kicking off the new year with an action-packed January, and our calendar is full of educational opportunities for all ages, movies, a celebration of our new India exhibit, a Dark Crystal game night and SO much more, including two Family Series productions. Keep reading to see the whole lineup and make your plans to visit us this January!
On stage Jan. 2-7: The Adventures of the Gingerbread Man. Classic stories such as Hansel and Gretel, Androcles and the Lion, The Frog Prince and The Three Wishes are woven together for a must-see retelling of folktale favorites. This show is presented in the Downstairs Theater, and the Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Gingerbread Man Shadow Puppet.
On stage beginning Jan. 23: Rainforest Adventures. It’s a jungle out there in this entertaining and enlightening peek at the amazing Amazonian rainforest. This show features many puppetry styles, including marionette and Czech Black, and is presented in the Mainstage Theater. The Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Pink River Dolphin Marionette.
In the Worlds of Puppetry Museum all month: Guided tours of the museum take place Tuesday-Friday at 1 pm, Saturday at 11 am. Guided tours of the Jim Henson Collection take place Tuesday-Friday at 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. Behind-the-scenes tours take place Saturdays and Sundays at 3 pm.
Now open in the Special Exhibit Gallery: Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing Dolls! Indian Puppets celebrate the cultural range of India by exploring the diversity of puppetry techniques and genres across the subcontinent. Learn how puppetry has been used in India for over a millennium as an important storytelling tool, while seeing both traditional and contemporary pieces. This special exhibit is included with Museum admission.

1/2: Toddler Tuesday! This month’s theme is “Snowmen.” This interactive museum program is designed for ages 2-4, and includes special games, dancing and story time!
1/9: Preschool Puppetry Playshop. These high-energy, engaging workshops feature reading activities, finger plays, puppet-making and more. Build confidence, motor and social skills, and celebrate creativity and puppetry in developmentally-appropriate ways.
1/10: World Wednesdays! Watch puppets come to life during this entertaining and educational hands-on presentation! Learn about different puppet traditions from around the world as you explore the rich culture of puppetry. Celebrate the intersection of geography, history, social studies, and the arts! Two options: With guided tour | Museum only.
1/11: Discovery Days. Join us as we celebrate puppetry traditions in other cultures through intimate, interactive programs.
1/12: Museum EdVenture Days. Join us for Museum EdVenture Days for an in-depth look at puppetry traditions from around the world with our interactive, hands-on Puppet Pop Up! gallery programs, then create and perform with your very own internationally-inspired puppet in a special version of our popular Create-A-Puppet Workshops™!

1/20: Celebration of India Family Day. Come celebrate the puppetry and culture of India! Special activities for the day include readings of The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk and a book signing with author Sue Sehgal, special gallery programs, puppet building activities, and more.
1/20: Movie day! Join us for an afternoon screening of Shaun the Sheep. Free with Museum admission. (Don’t forget that Museum admission is FREE for Members!)
1/21: Museum EdVenture Days.
1/21: Junior Explorers Series: Creative Claymation Celebration. Discover the basics of Claymation by creating and animating a character in its own movie. For ages 9-12 (plus their grown-up!)
1/27: Dark Crystal Game Night! If you pre-ordered the game, you may pick it up on this day. We will be hosting a game night in the evening; invite your friends! They only have to pay Museum admission; those who bought the game get in free.
