April showers bring May flowers, and our calendar is blooming this spring! We have three performances (two Family Series and one New Directions Series), museum activities and events, and educational offerings for all ages. Take a look at this month’s calendar and make a plan to visit us!

On stage in the Family Series through May 20: The Cat in the Hat. “It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how!” says the Cat in the tall red and white hat. All of your favorite moments from the classic Dr. Seuss tale come to life on stage. This show is presented in the Mainstage Theater, and the Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Cat in the Hat Shadow Puppet.

On stage in the Family Series beginning May 29: On the Road Again. You’re invited to go on a musical road trip with John Paul George and his singing dog, Ringo! What better way to pass time on the journey than to sing along with some fun and silly songs! This show is presented in the Downstairs Theater, and the Create-A-Puppet Workshop is the Singing Dog Hand Puppet.

On stage in the New Directions Series May 10-13: Xperimental Puppetry Theater. Every year, dozens of artists come together in Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT), a program that offers professional and emerging artists the opportunity to explore and experiment, creating original and bold puppet theater guaranteed to inspire and surprise adult audiences.This show is presented in the Downstairs Theater, and tickets include admission to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum. A beer and wine bar will be open before the show and during intermission.


In the Worlds of Puppetry Museum all month: Guided tours of the museum take place Tuesday-Friday at 1 pm, Saturday at 11 am. Guided tours of the Jim Henson Collection take place Tuesday-Friday at 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. Behind-the-scenes tours take place Saturdays and Sundays at 3 pm.

On display in the Special Exhibit Gallery: Indian Puppets: The Great Stories and Dancing DollsIndian Puppets celebrate the cultural range of India by exploring the diversity of puppetry techniques and genres across the subcontinent. Learn how puppetry has been used in India for over a millennium as an important storytelling tool, while seeing both traditional and contemporary pieces. This special exhibit is included with Museum admission.

Through May 5: Support our Power 2 Give campaign! The Center has launched a fundraising initiative for this important program. YOU can help artists bring their ideas to life! XPT helps artists by providing a physical space; small stipend; and opportunities for collaboration, creative guidance, and mentorship. We have until May 5 to raise funds, and the first $5,000 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs. Your gift will have DOUBLE the impact!

May 1: Toddler Tuesday. This month’s theme is Transportation! This interactive museum program is designed for ages 2-4, and includes special games, dancing and story time! 

May 21: Touring Puppeteers: Sharing the Stage (Explore Puppetry Series) Get out of the basement put that show on the road!  Learn tips and tricks from the pros on how to build wiser and pack your shows smarter.  Includes better business practices from a panel of touring puppeteers who “hit the road” nearly every single day. Ages 18+. $30 General | $20 Members


May 22: Preschool Puppetry Playshop. These workshops enhance motor skills, increase language and social skills, and develop self-confidence.  Programs feature reading activities, songs, fingerplays and puppet-making. These high-energy, engaging experiences support early childhood literacy by bringing to life a terrific book for early readers, and celebrate creativity and the arts in developmentally-appropriate ways.

May 23: World Wednesdays! Watch puppets come to life during this entertaining and educational hands-on presentation! Learn about different puppet traditions from around the world as you explore the rich culture of puppetry. Celebrate the intersection of geography, history, social studies, and the arts! Two options: With guided tour | Museum only

May 24: Discovery Days. Join us as we celebrate puppetry traditions in other cultures through intimate, interactive programs.

May 26: The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland double feature. 2 showings: 11 am and 1 pm. Included with Worlds of Puppetry Museum admission.

May 27: Fizz & Foam. Like wine and painting classes? Then you’ll love Fizz & Foam! You'll build and decorate a foam mouth puppet under the guidance of our Teaching Artists, and then try your new puppet out in our Jim Henson TV Studio. Price includes food, museum admission and all puppet-making supplies. The beer and wine bar will be open, and we'll have mimosas on special! $20 Members, $25 nonmembers; space is extremely limited.

May 28: Memorial Day; Center closed.
