Introduction to Puppet Building Workshop

Recommended for ages 5 and up.
In this hands-on workshop, students will build and decorate their very own puppet. The instructor will teach students vocabulary terms used in puppetry while exploring five different puppetry styles and a brief history of the art form. The workshop concludes with instructions on basic puppet manipulation. This one- to two-hour workshop can be tailored to any group or classroom theme. Meets Georgia Performance Standards. Shadow Puppet Invention Workshop

Recommended for 6th Grade and up.
This workshop is a wonderful way for students to use their imagination and creativity to explore the art of shadow puppetry. Students will learn the basic concepts of how shadow puppets work and are created. Using black cardstock, tape, paper fasteners, chopsticks, and a pair of scissors, students will construct a unique working shadow puppet from their own drawing. Every student will have an opportunity to manipulate their puppet on a real shadow puppet stage.

Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures

Recommended for ages 5 and up.
This unique workshop introduces students to the rich cultural traditions of puppetry from around the world through the use of authentic and replica puppets as well as video clips. Students will have the opportunity to hold and manipulate puppets from countries including Indonesia, China, and Turkey. Afterward, thry will construct and embellish their own puppet which has been modeled after a puppet from one of the cultures discussed. Meets Georgia Performance Standards for grades K-12. Human Rod Puppet - $7.00 per student
Bamana/Bozo-style Rod Puppet (Malian) - $7.00 per student
Fujian-style Hand Puppet (Chinese) - $7.00 per student
Karagöz-style Shadow Puppet (Turkish) - $7.00 per student
Bunraku-style Rod Puppet (Japanese) - $10.00 per student

Enjoy a unique learning experience for groups seeking a more in-depth look at puppets and how they are used around the world. Students will learn about puppetry styles from places like China, India, Japan, Indonesia, and Turkey, and more. The instructor uses both authentic and replica puppetsas well as video clips for this entertaining and educational hands-on presentation. Some students will have the opportunity to try out their puppeteering skills. Meets Georgia Performance Standards for grades K-12. Please call 404.881.5136 to schedule.

Puppet Factory

This puppet-making activity is perfect for festivals and promotional events. In an assembly-line fashion, participants build and decorate their very own puppet to take home. We provide one instructor and all puppet parts and decoration materials. Your organization provides tables, chairs, and four adult volunteers. Please call 404.881.5136 to schedule.
Fee: $170 per hour. Mileage rates apply. Yields about 60 puppets per hour. Two-hour minimum. Groups only.

Educational Activities at the Center

Create-A-Puppet Workshop

Recommended for ages 5 and up.
Children will learn about the unique art form of puppety by making a puppet to take home in these hands-on, curriculum-based workshops. Designs are different for each production and are based on that show's theme. On weekdays, groups also participate in a learning activity that relates to the show. Meets Georgia Performance Standards.

Don't have time to stay? Take your puppet kit to-go!
The Education Department will assemble individual bags of puppet-making materials for each person in your group. You supply glue and/or tape. Makes a great follow-up art activity to further engage students and reinforce what they've learned after a visit to the Center. Comes complete with a fully illustrated instruction sheet and a list of applicable Georgia Performance Standards. Regular workshop fees apply.

Preschool Workshop

Preschool puppet-making workshops can be scheduled for children ages two to four, featuring specially designed tables and a smaller student/teacher ratio. The workshop enhances motor skills, increases language and social skills, and develops self-confidence. Students enjoy a reading from a popular childrens' book and then make a puppet character from the story to take home. Meets Georgia Bright from the Start Pre-K Program Standards.

At present, the Center for Puppetry Arts does not tour any of its performances. However, if you would like to bring a professional puppeteer to your school, home or special event, you may consult the Puppetry Yellow Pages: A Resource Guide to Professional Services by UNIMA-USA. The Puppetry Yellow Pages is a service of the US division of the international puppetry organization, Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA-USA).
