Anne Frank: Within & Without

Anne Frank

by Bobby Box of the Center
2005-06 New Directions Series
Recommended for ages 12 and up.

How do you survive when you have to go without your friends? Without your freedom? Without the world you know? You go within… The remarkable story of Anne Frank and the hopes, dreams and inner strength that carried her from one day to the next are given new life in this Center for Puppetry Arts world premiere. Marionettes, rod puppets, hand puppets, projections and figures in a large "dollhouse" create the secret annex which she and her family called home. We follow the young girl from her German birth to the "diary days" when she hid from the Nazis in Amsterdam; then, from her ironic shuffling between camps to her lasting legacy today. Inspired by a trip to The Anne Frank House, associate producer Bobby Box creates a celebratory piece that is not just about death, war or "that poor little girl," but rather acts as a meditation on hope and all that is good in human kind.
