Behind the Scenes of
The Little Pirate Mermaid

About the Style of Puppetry
String and shadow are the styles of puppetry we are using in The Little Pirate Mermaid. The string puppets are suspended on fishing lines that go up to a control which the puppeteers hold in their hands. There are roughly 11 strings per puppet. Each string is about 7 feet long. The puppets are made from hand carved wood and molded plastic heads. The shadow puppets were made from thin sheets of plastic and jointed with pieces of wire. All of the puppets, costumes and scenery were made right here at the Center for Puppetry Arts.

About the Puppeteers

The Little Pirate Mermaid

Reay Kaplan has been a professional actor and puppeteer in Atlanta since 1999. In addition to performing in over 20 productions at the Center for Puppetry Arts, her work has been seen at Synchronicity Theater, The Alliance Theater, Haverty Marionettes, Dad’s Garage, and 7 Stages. In addition to live performing, Reay’s voice can be heard narrating audio books from time to time. Much love and thanks to the cast and crew of The Little Pirate Mermaid, and especially to my Handsome Pirate, Ethan, and my Beautiful Mermaid, Eliza.

The Little Pirate Mermaid

Julie Scarborough (Head Puppeteer) is thrilled to be on the high seas again! She has worked at the Center since 1998 and been in literally thousands of performances. Some of them include Peter Pan, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Cinderella Della Circus, Duke Ellington’s Cat, American Tall Tales, and many, many more. She hopes you enjoy the show and thanks you for supporting live theatre. You rock! Love to Steve (her pirate) and Elena and Veronica (her little mermaids)!

The Little Pirate Mermaid

Amy Strickland is happy to be reprising her roles in The Little Pirate Mermaid. Her past Center performances include The Adventures of Little Noodle, Ruth and the Green Book, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Ugly Duckling, Cinderella Della Circus, The Body Detective, Charlotte’s Web, Rainforest Adventures, Dinosaurs, and Winnie-the-Pooh. She has also puppeteered for Haverty Marionettes, The City of Orlando Puppetroupe, Am-Jam Productions, Pinocchio’s Marionette Theater, and Walt Disney World. She thanks her fellow sea creatures Julie, Reay, Jon, and Gillian! Hugs to Mom and Dad! Much love to Calico Tim!!!

The Little Pirate Mermaid

Tim Sweeney is thrilled to be back in another show here at the Center. Past Center performances include Peter Pan, SPACE!, Rumpelstiltskin, Aladdin, Rainforest Adventures, Cinderella Della Circus, The Ghastly Dreadfuls, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Huge “huzzahs!” to the merry band of buccaneers I work with and smooches to Amy for promising to share her pirate treasure with me forevermore.
