String Fling Gala 2004

If women are from Venus and men are from Mars, where are puppets from? The Center for Puppetry Arts, of course! The largest puppetry organization in the country – and Midtown’s treasure – held its annual fundraiser, String Fling Gala 2004, on Saturday, September 18, 2004.

Anne Park Amann Hopkins and Elizabeth Howard Newton co-chaired the starry evening of fine cuisine, a live & silent auction, and spectacular entertainment. The evening honored Mr. and Mrs. Bronson Smith for their generous contributions to the Center over the years.

Though she calls Atlanta home, special guest Jane Fonda can’t escape Hollywood. She and daughter Vanessa Vadim enjoyed the entertainment of Phillip Huber, the master marionettist who pulled Hollywood’s heartstrings in the feature film Being Jon Malkovich. Executive Director Vince Anthony presented the former Sci-Fi goddess with an anatomically correct Barbarella marionette constructed by uber-puppet designer Jason Hines.

Good-natured as usual, Fonda continued to secure her place as one of Atlanta’s most gracious advocates and philanthropists. She, along with Center board member Kip Caffey, auctioned off three of her cookbooks for a total of $5,000. Other live auction items included a trip to Tuscany and Dinner with the Dooley's, the former head coach and athletic director at UGA.

All monies raised from the event will help the Center continue its mission of using puppetry as a teaching tool.
