Multi-Session Introductory Course
Hand & Rod Puppetry 101 is a multi-session (Jan 25, Feb 1, 8, and 15) introductory course designed to introduce the fundamental ideas and techniques behind hand and rod puppetry. Open to all experience levels, including those with no prior puppetry or performance experience, Hand & Rod Puppetry 101 introduces the foundational techniques behind hand and rod puppetry, with a focus on the skills and vocabulary used in our work. It lays the groundwork for how to approach puppet animation, performance, and ensemble puppetry.
Throughout the class, students engage in exercises and explorations that build practical skills for puppet performance. These tools can be applied across a wide range of puppetry styles and performance contexts, from solo to scripted work and improvisation pieces.
This class is designed for performers seeking continued puppetry training, as well as artists, educators, and anyone curious about exploring puppetry in a focused, low-pressure environment. No prior puppetry experience is required.
Skills covered in the class include:
Breath and focus
Weight and resistance
Gesture and clarity of movement
Rod control and coordination
Lip sync
Please note that patrons must complete Hand and Rod 101 before taking Hand and Rod 102 and Hand and Rod 103 classes.
